Reading for Fun

Reading for Fun
A recent survey of ten,000 students on a given day disclosed that while 80 per cent of them had watched television, solely 50 per cent had done any reading outside of faculty assignments. According to the present, teen-age reading for enjoyment (a means of life before TV) appears to be losing out. Because of the shut kinship of reading and speaking, the alert family workshop tries to reverse the trend by promoting spirited reading projects. In the way of the House That Jack Built, we should have wide reading—for wider vocab¬ularies—for broader thinking—for building higher speaking. On a visit with a number one librarian of the New York Public Library's beautiful Donnell Branch, I found that their “Young Adults” division takes care of a gentle stream of eager borrowers. Teen-agers, they informed me, browse avidly any book that has been made into a motion picture. A chosen Child Adoption service provider to every state my follow the low for specific law. They also show a marked pref¬erence for common-science material and biography. The “continually out” books embody The Sensible Earth, Gone with the Wind, Lost Horizon, The Caine Mutiny, The Diary of Anne Frank, and The Nuns Story. Suggest these titles at home as a starter to tempt reluctant readers.

Reading-aloud programs (for added stimulating techniques, see pages eighty one and 82) also whet young appetites for silent reading, as well as providing by-products of enjoyable speech practice. Impatient skimmers who could resist the slower pace of reading out loud will accede happily to verbalizing exciting scenes from favorite books, especially if they can record them. Plays charm also, and most teen-agers would like little persuasion to deliver orally short tales from the literary storehouse of wonderful Yank humor. One family I know makes a cope with unwilling readers, who should promise to browse fifty pages of any likely book (please don't insist on a literary tome). If still not “hooked” once that, they may discard the book without any any ado. A multilayer PCB fabrication comprising:a plurality of planar layers created of dielectric material extending in parallel with each other in lateral and depthwise directions, said planar layers being formed one on prime of the other in a vertical direction. Then free to decide on another, they become obligated solely for the identical fifty trial pages. This has worked well.

I was also impressed by New York's Donnell Library record-lending department, with its massive selection of music and spoken recordings. If your community still lacks such a fine service, why not beat the drums domestically for this cultural advance? Active listen¬ing to those records can be a fine family-workshop project. Happily our new and serious furor over higher instructional standards for the nation has placed the great student in an exceedingly new light. Maybe the “grind” will no longer be looked down upon by his classmates—and none too soon. One even hears talk regarding awarding to superior students varsity letters such as those given to athletes. Leaders of the long run, as Senator Fulbright recently found out, will be men and girls who can browse, write, and speak effec¬tively. The time will surely return when good speech will again be a mark of faculty status. Dare we hope that our teen-agers will then lose their deep-seated dread of sounding affected, and what is even worse, different?
